Using Chiropractic to Improve Sleep & Insomnia

There’s nothing worse than waking up at 3 a.m. and not being able to fall back asleep.

Hour after hour goes by. And no matter how tired your body and mind might feel, you just can’t seem to drift off again.

It may be thoughts of a problem at work that keep you up, or maybe the well-being of your family, or even just the stress trying to fall back asleep in time to feel refreshed in the morning.

No matter what it is that keeps you up at night, insomnia and other sleep-related problems can have a disastrous effect on your health, mood, and your productivity.

Luckily though, studies have shown that taking a trip to your chiropractor might be all it takes to help you sleep more soundly through the night.

How Common Are Sleep Problems?

From insomnia and sleep apnea to restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy, there are over 100 different types of sleep-related disorders according to the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine.  

With such a wide range of sleep problems out there, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that about 45% of Americans reported that their daily lives are being affected by inadequate sleep. And while we may be getting a healthy amount of sleep (around 6-8hrs every night), it seems like the reason most of us aren’t waking up feeling refreshed is connected to the quality of our sleep.

One of the biggest contributors to poor sleep quality seems to be poor health quality. In fact, 67% of individuals with low sleep quality reported that that they believed their quality of health was “poor” or “only fair”. And given that our general health is strongly connected to our levels and quality of sleep, this type of situation can lead to a destructive downward spiral.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

While some sufferers of poor sleep may treat themselves with prescription pills or over the counter sleep aids, one of the healthiest and most natural ways of treating your sleep disorder is chiropractic care.

In addition to the overall health benefits of seeing a chiropractor (both in terms of back health and general health), taking a trip to see your chiropractor can be instrumental in treating your sleep disorder as well.

For instance, one study showed that out of 221 surveyed participants, almost one third felt immediate sleep benefits resulting from their chiropractic treatment.

And it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise either. Chiropractic care helps realign your spine to be able to better transmit nerve impulses throughout your body, resulting in better function and lesser pain.
