Don’t Let Poor Posture Cause Neck Pain

Even office jobs can affect your overall health and cause neck and back pain. Your posture at your desk may be contributing to muscle fatigue, strain, tension, and pain. At Brodwyn and Associates, our chiropractors and staff have extensive experience diagnosing and treating spine and muscle disorders. We specialize in safe, effective, non-invasive, and drug-free chiropractic treatment, including shockwave therapy, exercise therapy, physical therapy, decompression therapy, posture correction, and workplace ergonomics. Take a look at how you can improve your posture at work to avoid neck pain in Columbus, GA

Put Your Computer Monitor at Eye Level

If your computer monitor isn’t at eye level, you’ll end up raising or lowering your head to look at the screen. This means that your neck will need to support the forward or backward weight of your head for hours at a time. Eventually, this will strain your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cervical spine and cause neck pain and stiffness. A poorly placed computer monitor can also contribute to eye strain and headaches. Make sure the center of your computer monitor is at eye level.

Use a Phone Headset

Another contributing factor to work-related neck pain is using a phone all day. When you hold a phone’s handset between your ear and shoulder, you tilt your head, neck, shoulders, and upper back in a way that is unnatural. Over time, the added stress put on your neck’s joints, discs, and ligaments can cause degenerative changes. A hands-free device like a headset or earpiece will keep you from straining your neck.

Practice Supportive Posture

Supportive posture is posture that applies the correct level of balance and support to the vertebrae, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Keep your feet flat on the floor and your thighs tilted slightly downward. Your back should be pressed flat against the back of your chair. Your shoulders should be back and level, and your head should be straight over your shoulders. Don’t twist your back or neck while seated, or cross one leg over another. Avoid looking up or down for long periods of time, and get up and stretch every 30-45 minutes.
